Црква Светог архангела Михаила 1751-2001

On 15th August, 1751 on insisting of Hungarian aristocracy and district offices Empress Maria Therezia passed decision on the Tisa and the Moriš border suspension resulting in surrendering of all military trenches to district offices while the borders had to join civil services. This decision caused great dissatisfaction with Serbian borderers so there was mass emigration of population from these military borders.

To prevent emigration Empress founded The Tisa Crown District and on 28th June the same year passed the text of the Charter on Privileges. These privileges were of great and long influencing importance for survival and life of Serbian people in the Tisa region.

The seventeenth item of the Charter said: "In the mentioned Tisa district believes, religion and church rites, with its inner and outer organization, celebrations of holidays according to old calendar, as well as building churches and towers on the ground given and as for us certified privileges is further on completely free and no one is to disturb them performing the same. Their priests together with the land are unviolable and their privileges remain permanently valid."

In such atmosphere of 1751 Church of St. Arhangel Michael was built.

To be able to carry on with reforms started and organization of parish life, Serbian Ortodox Church in Habzburg Monarchy asked for support of its believers in material respect.

Serbian population was gathered round Serbian societies which appeared in Karlovac's metropolitan`s residence resembling traditional churches ofrenewed patriarchate of Peć.

Life of Ortodox St. Archangel Michael's church in Senta was based on believers, in the first place, as well as the church's live body.

One of the basic concerns of parish religious community was education of the young particularly in the period when primary schools were exclusively within authority of perishes.

In the last decade of the 18th century Senta had Ortodox Serbian school.

Later, Empress Decree from 1812 permitted foundation of girls' schools so the first one was opened in 1862.

At the beginning and the middle of the 19th century beside religions service books number of printed books for other cultural purposes increased.

In 1859 the perish founded School Board and School Library as a result of those romantic, national educational believes and endeavors which resulted in foundation on Matica Srpska.

Municipal church community as a kind of institution was central organization which took care of the church, school and citizen funds. It grew up to a powerful and rich religious institution thanks to great financial support of its believers.

At the end of the 60's of the 19th century perishes of Karlovac metropolity faced new period of work which ended with I World War braking out.

With the end of the war there were changes in politics in their favor.

In internal organization of perishes there were church assembly and church board as its executive body competent for church and school work. Church board elected the priests and teacher, decided on their salary and administered perish property.

Thanks to such a position, church and perish had a significant role in creation of moral codex of believers.

About the middle of the 30's of the 20th century the perish experienced serious economic crisis resulting in sale of the parts of endowment land.

Some changes in work of the perish appeared during the Second World War and the entry of Hungarian occupation army in Senta. In that period Serbian cross was moved to churchyard.

Postwar years were extremely difficult for free performance of church which was restricted by ideology of the ruling communist party.

Church property was nacionalised (land and houses) so the care for church and its maintenance was in care of believers.

After SFRY fell apart and criticism directed to the policy of actual government church was in position of "ignored church", but after 05th October, 2000 democratic changes have given hope for religion and church treatment to be solved in just way.

Parish of Senta is to be given back property of 12 houses and 118 hectare of land which would renew the work of endowments.
